Cried
If I when doing work in school
Whilst the teacher babbles on and the students drift away
Got up and began to sing
While the notes fall out of my mouth like a drunken haze
And midnight teenage wails
If I in the church
Stood up and began to sing
Would the Priest cower behind the piano?
Then I would sing softly to myself:
“I only exist when I am wanted
People like me are hardly ever wanted”
If I who sang in the church and school
Walked invisibly down the open field
And the sang the tones out and loud
Who shall say they hear me?
If I when doing work in school
Whilst the teacher babbles on and the students drift away
Got up and began to sing
While the notes fall out of my mouth like a drunken haze
And midnight teenage wails
If I in the church
Stood up and began to sing
Would the Priest cower behind the piano?
Then I would sing softly to myself:
“I only exist when I am wanted
People like me are hardly ever wanted”
If I who sang in the church and school
Walked invisibly down the open field
And the sang the tones out and loud
Who shall say they hear me?
